In case you have an email address with your own personal domain instead of a 3rd-party one, you will be able to use an email software application such as Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird to check and manage your emails. The benefit of using such applications is that they also offer other features, such as calendars and address books. There are two different email retrieval protocols that you can select from when you set up the application of your preference to access your mailbox – POP3 and IMAP. With the first one, all messages that are received will be downloaded onto your device – mobile or desktop, unless you choose to leave a copy on the email server. With the second protocol, the messages will be displayed at your end, but they will remain on the server at all times, so you can set up the email account on numerous devices and access the email messages from any location. You will also be able to view old email messages if there is a problem with your Internet connectivity, which is a big advantage over a web-based service.
